I’m Tired of Hoping White People Will Do Better

When it comes to racism, I don’t need you to hope, I need you to do something about yourselves.

I read a fantastic series by Nancy Myers Rust titled “The 5 Stages of White Privilege” which succinctly addressed just how difficult it is for White people to grasp their privilege. She centered her stages of White privilege around the stages we go through when we grieve. I won’t give away any details because it was a great read for White people interested in understanding how you guys look when you finally realize you’re kinda racist and most certainly privileged.

When I got to the final stage of her piece, I agonized over three little words she wrote close to the end. She wrote, “So we hope.”

So we hope.

I must admit I stewed a little reading those words after being taken on the emotional rollercoaster I received from the visual of a White person awakening from her liberal privileged slumber. I had the opportunity to witness what White privilege looks and feels like. It was tangible, and I certainly appreciated it. I was rubbed by the recurring theme of White people not knowing what to do and standing still as if they’re waiting on a White shepherd to tend and steer them into the right direction.

I was upset with the three little words because even hoping for White people to me is a privilege. For me, hope is an privileged White person’s scapegoat. They get to hope things get better. I have to hope I can make it through the day without a racist interaction in person or online. White people using hope as a crutch is like saying I’m smart, but I’m not going to do anything with all the knowledge I possess. When it comes to racism, White people, you don’t get to hope. Ya’ll need to be laying hands on these racist, raggedy White Supremacist systems and institution’s to dismantle them.

You need to be calling out meemaw and pawpaw when they say racist shit they are spoon fed from Fox News all day long. You good White people need to be checking that White cashier who treated the Black customer shitty in front of you before greeting you just like you’re a part of his/her family.

Do something. Do. Something.

I don’t believe you should have the privilege of hoping things will change as it relates to racism because while your ancestors may have created the social construct of race, you folks continue to support White people gain from in it. You also benefit from it.

Hope is for me and the millions of Black people in America like me — the victims of your White inaction and the primary objects of your racial resentments.

Why Your White Hope Sucks
Your White hope sucks because it does nothing to improve my life. It doesn’t make my grandkids’ White teachers treat them any better in their classrooms, and it won’t force the guidance counselor to treat them like they are gifted instead of treating them as if they are a behavior problem in need of confinement.

I’m left to hope White people change. I hope White people can see past suspecting my Black sons at the gas pump, or in the parking lot of the grocery stores. I’m left hoping one day White people will believe in fairness, justice, and equality for all enough to change their wicked ways.

If I’m hoping and White people are standing next us hoping and not doing shit, that means nothing is getting done. You’re infamous for apathy and doing nothing. Surprise us and do something different.

We Want White Action, Nothing Less
I need White people to do something. Do something like stand up to the assholes, racists, and the biased people in who belong to your race. I need White people to stop being afraid of White people. How in the fuck are you all afraid of your own damned people? If you’re afraid of yourselves, how am I supposed to do anything to stop White people? My momma used to tell me she wasn’t afraid of anything that came from out of her vagina. When we started getting too big for our britches, she would say to us she gave us life, and she could take it away.

It’s a Black mama thing, but the gist of this saying is that she wasn’t afraid of anything she created, and her own children would not intimidate her. If White people are afraid of White people, Lord help us!

Why can’t good White people have that same spunk to stop bad White people from being racist? Why don’t you all counsel White folks on their thinking like you do to me about my way of thinking in my comments? Why are White folks wired (or taught) to be so blind, apathetic, fragile and scary? How are we going to win any racism battles if the biggest fight you have in you is one where your weapon of choice is White hope (and prayers)?

You can’t slay dragons with hope, honey.

White folks want to use hope as their invisible life rafts, expecting Black folks to give them credit for sitting on the sidelines with us doing nothing, while hoping your racist cousins, friends, family members, granny, and church family will change.

That’s not how this thing works. That’s not how any of this works. Racist White people are everyone’s problem, and hope won’t rid of us any of them.

Good White people procreate good White people who do nothing meaningful to end racism and racial disparities. They just keep living and reaping the benefits of racism (directly or indirectly). Likewise, bad White people keep breeding bad/evil White people, and it seems there are more of those kinds of White people than there are good, so the good White people sit on the sidelines — and hope. Sounds ridiculous, right?
That’s because it is.

Combating racism with hope is the equivalent of Black people being in a burning house, suffocating from the thick smoke, with all the windows and doors to the house nailed shut. We’re trying to get out, but we can’t because the owners of the house sealed us in really good. We’re trapped, and there’s no way in and no way out.

Your hope White people is the shiny red fire truck coming to the scene of a fire, setting up, but never putting on protective gear to ensure you’re kept safe. You never turn on the water to put the fire out. You White firefighters just stand on the sidewalk looking at the house we’re stuck in burn down, watching the Black people inside die a slow, painful death.

That’s what your hope is to me. It’s useless.

White Actions Speak Louder Than White Words
I don’t need you to hope White people; I need you check your privilege, dismantle racism, call out racism, discourage racism, implore other White people, arise from your sofas and slumber, kick down gates and doors that embolden White privilege and White Supremacy, beat back racist uprisings, uncover institutional and structural racism, and share your power and White spaces.

We are having a once in a lifetime national public health crisis because of racism, and White people can’t even admit it. White people wanted to make America great again. We’re so great right now it’s killing us.

I can trace the inadequate response to Covid-19 in America to White people wanting a stupid, con-artist sociopathic White man in their White House because they felt like Blacks sneaking in the back door to get there was a social faux pas that needed to be corrected.

Now here we are 3-years and some change later and we’re sick, dying, and we forced to look at 45s orange ass every fucking day because White people can’t do anything about themselves! Good White folks are just sitting at home hoping things will get better while the bad White motherfuckers send us to our deaths. These are the shitty situations hope creates.

White people are even dying now because of White Supremacy. I thought you guys would do more than just hope by now. I was wrong.

White people, over the centuries you’ve craftily created the illusion of your own importance. You’ve created a world where you’re always centered and others don’t matter. Your group created racism intentionally. It’s all about power and White privilege and White Supremacy are all about power. It’s instituted with precision and maintained with much care.

White Supremacy doesn’t work because White people hope it works. White people do stuff to make it work and to keep it intact. So ya’ll gotta work to make it not work. Hope doesn’t stop White Supremacy and White privilege. Doing something about it does.

White people, you need to do something. I’m tired of your hope because your hope doesn’t bring about any changes for me and my loved ones. So, if you tell us you’re hoping for change, you’re telling us you’re the White firefighters standing outside of the house watching the house burn as we suffocate to death. You will allow the house to burn down because you’re hoping the people who set the fires and nailed us shut inside will eventually do the right thing. White people, you gotta do something.

I’m tired of White people and their White hope. It’s worthless and it does more harm than you’ll ever know. Your hope doesn’t bring about change.

White hope keeps White power front and center. I need more than White people hoping on my behalf. I need you If that’s all you got for me, then we are up shit creek without a paddle, and this is the conclusion most Black folks have already come to.

Fuck hope.

I must admit I stewed a little reading those words after being taken on the emotional rollercoaster of watching a White woman awaken from her lack of White privilege awareness slumber to demonstrate what it looks like.

I was upset with the writer’s words because even hoping for White people to me is a privilege. For me, it’s their scapegoat. When it comes to racism and White inaction, hope is the cousin of doing nothing at all. It’s like saying I’m smart, but I’m not going to do anything with it. You need to be calling out meemaw and pawpaw when they say racist shit from Fox News they sit around and watch all day. You need need to do something. You’re not the victims here, so you don’t get to hope and dream like Dr. Martin Luther King. White people, we need you do act — now.

I don’t believe you should have the privilege of hoping thing will change as it related to racism because while your ancestors may have created the social construct of race, you White people continue to support White people participating in it.

Hope isn’t for you. It’s for me and the millions of Black people in America like me — the victims of your White inaction and the primary objects of your racial resentments.

Why Your White Hope Sucks

Your White hope suchs because it does nothing to make my life better. I’m left to hope White people change. I hope White people can see past suspecting my Black sons want to harm them or their White daughters if they are on an elevator, at the gas pump, or in the parking lot of the gas station. I’m left hoping one day White people will believe in fairness, justice, and equality for all that they’ll do something.

We Want White Action, Nothing Less

I need White people to do something. Do something like stand up to the assholes, racists, and biased people in your race, and how about teaching People of Color marching in your racist footsteps what you do is wrong too, so modeling their behavior towards by yours makes them wrong too. We’re not just fighting White people, White people. We’re fighting against all the model minorities and immigrants you recruit and train to be just like you White people, racist as fuck!

Yeah, we know about all the racist propaganda you’ve perpetuated throughout the world to divide people of color. It’s a whole thing.

I need White people to stop being afraid of White people. How in the fuck are you all afraid of your own damned people? If you’re afraid of yourselves, how am I supposed to do anything to stop you. My momma used to tell me she wasn’t afraid of anything that came from out of her vagina. When we started getting too big for our britches, she would say to us she gave us life, and she could take it away.

You can’t slay dragons with hope honey. I’m gonna need y’all to do more.

You want to use hope as your invisible life rafts and expect Black folks to give you credit for sitting on the sidelines with us doing nothing, hoping your racist cousins, friends, family members, and church family will change.

White Actions Speak Louder Than White Words

I don’t need you to hope White people, I need you check, dismantle, call out, discourage, implore, arise, kick down, beat back, uncover, and share.

Check your White privilege card every day. Recognize you have one, and it’s with you until the day you close your eyes.

Dismantle every racist system and institution White people created in America and throughout the world. Silence is consent, and in your cases, hope doesn’t bring about any changes for Black and Brown folks. Get up off your asses and start undoing racist systems. Vote different. See different. Think different. Process racism differently. Tolerate racist bullshit from White people differently.

Call out racism. If a person of color writes something and a White person (or a White sounding person hiding behind an online persona) says something out of line, don’t just read it, call it out. At work and your colleagues are treating the token minority wrong, call it out. White people are plenty comfortable in thinking and acting racist. Make things uncomfortable for racist White people by calling it out.

Discourage White folks from avoiding guilt and deflecting from their racism. Shenanigans like reverse-racism and race-baiting are tools White people, especially White men, love to use when someone hurts their feelings. Being a victim of racism is worse than being called a racist. Trust me. It’s okay to be guilty and ashamed, it’s not cool to deflect.

Implore White people to do better. You can always do better. You’re never finished. You’ve never done enough. You can’t possibly right ever wrong if White people aren’t imploring White people to do better. If for the greater good, and if you can’t get your own people to stop being racist, how in the hell do you think we are going to be able to. It starts and ends with White people.

Arise from your hope party and do something. Dr. Martin Luther King talked about well meaning White liberal racists who are unable to see their own racism. Hope gives White people an excuse to do nothing. Nobody wants your hope. We want results. Hope is kicking the can down the road for another generation. We are having a public health crisis because of racism, and White people can’t even admit it. Wake up and do something. You’re making all of us sick! I can trace the inadequate response to Covid-19 in America to White people wanting a stupid con-artist White man in their White House.

And here we are. Sick, dying, and we are still forced to look at his orange ass every fucking day! This is the shit that hope creates.

Kick down every door and every gate used to maintain White Supremacy. Hope is weak. You can’t win any fights with hope. I need to see you fighting to end White Supremacy, the great grandma of White privilege.

Beat back racism White people. Racism grows in White spaces like mold in a warm moist place when nobody is looking. It continues to grow if the conditions don’t change and there is no light to kill it. It starts with you and ends with you. If you’re not going to keep it from getting out.

Uncover the limitless ways racism works and then work to expose them. White people, you all have been engaging in psychological warfare against us Black folks for 400 years and counting. It’s time for you all to uncover how terrible you’ve been to us, then find meaningful ways to help us heal as we move try to forward as a human race.

Share everything you don’t share right now. All those White spaces you possess, Imma need you all to dingy those White spaces up meaningfully by adding Black and Brown folks the mix. Intentionally. Give up some of your power. Share access. Share resources. Share tax dollars. Share communities. Share power. Relinquish corners on markets (i.e. publishing, business, employment, education, media, marketing, etc.). If all you see is Whiteness, well, you start to think you’re the most important group in the equation, you’re always right and nothing or no one else matters.

White people, over the centuries you’ve craftily created the illusion of your own importance. You’ve create a world where you’re always centered and others don’t matter. White people created racism and colorism. Your group created racism intentionally. It was done with precision, and maintained with much care. White Supremacy doesn’t work by hoping it works. White people do stuff to make it work and to keep it intact. So y’all gotta work to make it not work. Hope doesn’t stop White Supremacy and White privilege. Doing something about it does.

White people, you need to do something. I’m tired of your hope because your hope doesn’t bring about any changes for me and my loved ones. So, tell us you’re hoping for change, because you’re the firefighters standing outside of the house watching suffocate. You’re burning the house down because you’re hoping the people who set the fires will eventually do the right thing.

I’m tired of White people and that old White hope. It’s worthless and it does more harm than you’ll ever know.
